Triathlon Time Calculator
Planning a triathlon? Use this free triathlon calculator to estimate your finish time from your swim, bike, run and transition times. Enter the distances and times for your event, and add race cut-off times to see whether your estimated result fits the rules.
Your race times
Enter the distances for your event, then add your estimated swim, bike, run and transition times. Cut-off times are optional.
How long does a triathlon take?
There is no single finish time that defines a triathlon. Your result depends on your swimming, cycling and running ability, the course, conditions and how quickly you move through the transitions.
A common sprint format is a 750m swim, 20km bike and 5km run, although individual events can use different distances. That is why this calculator lets you change the distances rather than assuming every race is identical.
How to use the triathlon calculator
If this is your first triathlon, use realistic training times rather than your fastest ever swim, bike or run. Your race-day swim may be different from a pool session, and the bike and run happen after you have already spent time swimming and transitioning.
Don't forget the transitions. T1 is the change from swimming to cycling, while T2 is the change from cycling to running. They may only take a few minutes each, but they are part of your official finish time.
What are the standard sprint triathlon distances?
The traditional sprint format is 750m swim, 20km bike and 5km run. Pool-based sprint events and individual races can use different distances, so always check the race information for the event you are entering.
What are triathlon cut-off times?
Cut-off times are deadlines set by an event for reaching a particular point in the race. Some triathlons have cut-offs for the swim, bike or overall finish, while others have no formal cut-offs at all.
Cut-off rules are different from one event to another. Always check the official rules or athlete information for the event you are entering. Cut-off times are not always clearly shown on the main event website, and missing a cut-off can have different consequences. Some events may require you to retire from the race, while others may allow you to continue but without official race support or classification.
The cut-offs in this calculator are optional. For the individual swim, bike and run fields, enter the maximum time allowed for that discipline. If your event also has an overall finish cut-off, enter that separately. The calculator will warn you when your estimated time is at or beyond a cut-off.
Triathlon calculator FAQs
What is a typical triathlon finish time?
There is no single typical finish time that applies to every sprint triathlon. Course distance, terrain, weather, transitions, experience and fitness can all make a significant difference. The best way to estimate your own finish time is to use realistic swim, bike and run times for the course you are entering.
What are the standard triathlon distances?
Triathlon distances vary depending on the event. Sprint triathlons commonly use a 750m swim, 20km bike and 5km run, while longer events use different distances. Enter the distances for your own event above.
How accurate is a triathlon time calculator?
A calculator can give you a useful estimate when you enter realistic times, but it cannot predict exactly what will happen on race day. Swim conditions, hills, wind, temperature, transitions and the course itself can all affect your actual finish time.
